SEO in Dharan: the map pack is held from out of town
Across four Dharan queries, one map pack result showed a Dharan address. The rest sit in Itahari, Biratnagar and Janakpur. What that means for you.
One Dharan address across
twelve map pack slots
On 12 August 2026 I pulled Google’s Nepal results for four Dharan queries — seo expert in dharan, seo services in dharan, digital marketing agency in dharan and local seo dharan. Twelve map pack slots between them.
Google printed Itahari under five of those slots — Bardali Creations and Nepsus Tech doing most of that work — Biratnagar under three, and Janakpur under one, where Digital Rakesh is addressed. One slot showed a bare street address, 15 Nirmal chowk. Two showed no address line at all, which is how Google displays a profile whose address has been hidden, so I cannot tell you where those two are.
That leaves exactly one result across four queries with a Dharan address visible on it: Cyberros at 15 Nirmal chowk, showing 4.4 from eight reviews on the day I looked. On seo expert in dharan, the query in this town with the clearest hiring intent behind it, none of the three showed a Dharan address.
None of this breaks a rule and I am not accusing anyone of anything. Google ranks on proximity, prominence and relevance, and a claimed, categorised, actively reviewed profile sixteen kilometres down the Koshi Highway in Itahari beats an unclaimed one in Dharan every time. That is the opportunity, and it is narrower than “do SEO”: proximity is the one factor a Dharan business owns by default and an Itahari competitor cannot copy, and here it is losing to profiles that are merely more complete. I have written the same overlap from the other side in SEO for businesses in Itahari.
What page one for
the query actually contains
Below the pack, the organic results are weaker still. In the same pull, the top result was a page on truelancer.com listing e-commerce SEO freelancers in Dharan — a marketplace that generates a page for any city string you hand it. Third was twine.net, a jobs board, offering SEO jobs in Dharan. Fifth was a national page that gives Dharan three sentences beginning “Dharan is a vibrant educational and commercial city”.
Second place went to a single page covering Itahari, Biratnagar and Dharan together. Not one result on page one was a Dharan business’s own page about working in Dharan.
A surname in another country, holding a page one slot
Fourth place went to a LinkedIn profile belonging to an SEO specialist whose own summary places him in Chennai. He ranks on this query because his surname is Dharan.
I have no criticism of him, and I have deliberately left his name off this page, because it is a signal about the market rather than about the man. When a town produces almost no content about itself, a name collision in another country is good enough to take a slot on its page one.
A “Top 10 SEO companies in Dharan” with no way to contact any of them
Seventh was an article on aamconsultants.org titled “Top 10 Best SEO Companies in Dharan”, which I read on 12 August 2026. Two things on it are checkable in a minute.
- The section covering all ten firms carries no hyperlink, no address and no phone number for any of them. The string “+977” does not appear anywhere on the page.
- The page’s one call to action reads: “Want to publish a guest post on aamconsultants.org? Place an order for a guest post or link insertion today.”
I am not going to tell you those ten firms do not exist — I have not established that. The narrower point is enough: the article ranking for Dharan hiring intent sits on a site that sells placements, and it gives a Dharan owner no phone number, no address and no website for a single one of the local firms it names.
Dharan gets searched by
institution name, not by category
This is the part that changes what you should build, and it does not transfer to the next town down the highway.
Dharan runs on named institutions. B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences at Ghopa is a health sciences university, not only a hospital, and Purwanchal Campus is one of the Institute of Engineering’s constituent campuses. How much weight those names carry shows up in the volumes.
Google Keyword Planner, Nepal, English, pulled 12 August 2026:
| Query | Monthly searches | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| bpkihs | 3,600 | Low |
| hospital in dharan | 90 | Low |
| purwanchal campus | 2,400 | Low |
| college in dharan | below reporting threshold | — |
| hotel in dharan | 2,400 | Medium |
| bhedetar | 8,100 | Low |
| budhasubba temple | 2,900 | Low |
On the same tool on the same day, bpkihs was searched roughly forty times as often as hospital in dharan — 3,600 against 90. About the blank row: “below reporting threshold” means Planner will not report a figure at that volume. It does not mean nobody searches it, and I would not build a plan on the assumption that it is zero.
For a clinic, diagnostic lab, pharmacy or hostel near Ghopa, that means chasing hospital in dharan is chasing ninety searches a month. The demand is attached to the institution’s name and to the map pack, which is where somebody standing outside the BPKIHS gate at eight in the evening is actually looking.
Hospitality inverts it. Hotel in dharan is the one category term in this town carrying medium advertiser competition, which means somebody is bidding real money on it. And Bhedetar at 8,100 a month is a third audience again — day-trippers coming up the highway, deciding on the way where to stop. A Dharan restaurant that never mentions Bhedetar or Budhasubba is ignoring the two things most likely to have brought a visitor within walking distance of it.
Taking a slot that is
currently held from out of town
Three things follow from the pack data above, in the order I would do them.
Put the pin on your door. Proximity is the only factor an Itahari competitor cannot buy, and it counts for nothing until Google knows exactly where you are. Dharan addresses run on chowk names rather than street numbers — the one Dharan-addressed profile in these packs is listed as “15 Nirmal chowk” — so the map pin does more work here than the address text does. Drag it onto the building, not onto the chowk. The claiming and verification steps are the same everywhere in Nepal and I have written them out in setting up a Google Business Profile in Nepal.
Check the bar before you assume it is high. The three profiles holding seo services in dharan carried 29, 12 and eight reviews the day I pulled them. That is what you are competing with. Two dozen genuine reviews from customers who live in Sunsari puts you level with them, and a review that names a Dharan chowk or landmark came from somebody who was physically here — which is the one signal an Itahari profile cannot manufacture.
Build pages on the names, not the categories. The volume table is the instruction. A page about what you do for people coming out of BPKIHS or Purwanchal Campus, or for people heading up to Bhedetar, points at where the searches are. A page built around hospital in dharan points at ninety of them. If you want the detail of how I run this — and the guide to local SEO in Nepal behind it — it is on my local SEO service page.
Where I would
start in Dharan
Dharan is the thinnest local search market I have looked at in eastern Nepal, and I mean that as good news. The businesses holding your results are not stronger than you. They are in Itahari, and they claimed their profiles.
Given one quarter and a small budget, I would spend all of it on the pack: the pin on your actual door, two dozen reviews from people who live in Sunsari, and one page about the institution or the landmark your customers are coming from. The competition for that last one today is a jobs board, a freelancer marketplace and a list with no phone numbers on it.
I take a small number of clients at a time, and most of the above does not need me. Every figure here came from one day of pulls and none of it needed a paid tool, so apply to me the test I applied to page one: search your category next month, and if the pack shows three Dharan addresses, this page is out of date and you should hold me to that.
FAQ
Questions I
get asked here
Why do Itahari and Biratnagar businesses appear in Dharan's Google Maps results instead of local ones?
Because Google weighs prominence and relevance alongside distance, and sixteen kilometres is not far enough to rule a profile out. An Itahari business with a claimed profile, the right category and the 29 reviews I counted on one of these packs outranks a Dharan business with an unclaimed or half-filled one. Proximity is in your favour, but it is one factor of three and it cannot carry a profile nobody has finished.
My customers come from Dhankuta, Bhojpur and Sankhuwasabha, not just Dharan. Should I still target Dharan?
Yes, target Dharan first. Dharan is where people from the eastern hills come down to buy, so most of that demand either searches Dharan by name or searches nearby once it has arrived. Win your own town's pack before building district pages: thin pages for hill districts you have never traded in are a common way to spend a budget and get nothing back.
My clinic is beside BPKIHS. Should I put BPKIHS in my business name or page titles?
Not in your Google Business Profile name. Google's business name guideline is that the name field must be your real-world business name, and padding it with a nearby institution is the kind of thing that gets a profile suspended — which costs you the exact pack slot you are trying to win. On your own website it is fine and sensible to describe your location honestly in the page text: near Ghopa, opposite the BPKIHS gate. That is what people actually type.
Almost nobody in Dharan writes about their business online. Does that mean there is no demand here?
No. It means the demand is not phrased the way you would expect. On Keyword Planner for Nepal, English, on 12 August 2026, bpkihs returned 3,600 searches a month and bhedetar 8,100, while hospital in dharan returned 90 and college in dharan sat below Planner's reporting threshold entirely. Dharan searches for named institutions and named places, so a business writing only category pages is invisible to almost all of it.
Should a Dharan hotel or restaurant target Bhedetar as well?
Usually yes, and as its own page rather than a mention. Bhedetar returned 8,100 monthly searches against 2,400 for hotel in dharan on the same pull, and the intent is different — somebody planning a day trip up the highway, deciding where to eat or stay around it. Answer that specifically, including travel time and what is open when, rather than dropping the word onto your homepage.
