City-level SEO across Nepal.

Seven cities, seven separate playbooks: Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal, Biratnagar, Dharan and Itahari. Each page starts from the search results that city actually returns — checked, dated, and named — rather than from a national keyword list. Pick your city, or read on for what changes between them.

Editorial visualization of local search demand spread across seven Nepali cities
Nepal city search signals

One country,
seven different search markets.

Local SEO is the work of ranking in the results Google assembles from where the searcher is standing — the Maps three-pack, and the organic results reordered by proximity. In Nepal that reordering is severe enough that two businesses selling the same service, ninety minutes apart, face different competitors, different prices and sometimes a different country's results.

That is not a theory I am asking you to accept. Each city page below records what the search results returned on a named date, with the tool and the location setting written down, so you can re-run the check yourself. Where a query returns no reportable search volume, the page says so instead of printing a number.

Four things change from city to city:

  • Who holds the map pack. In Dharan, three of four checked queries returned a map pack with no Dharan address in it — the slots sit in Itahari, Biratnagar and Janakpur. Proximity does not save you when nobody nearby has claimed a profile.
  • Which country answers the query. Search for an SEO expert in Bharatpur from inside Nepal and Google returns Indian agencies. The Biratnagar results price Nepali buyers in Indian rupees. A border city is competing in two markets whether it wants to or not.
  • Whether the buyer is even local. A Pokhara trekking operator's customer is booking from Berlin or Sydney. Proximity signals do nothing for them, so the work moves to source markets and seasons instead of postcodes.
  • How much ground is unclaimed. In Butwal most categories still have no serious competitor. That is the cheapest kind of ranking there is, and it does not stay cheap.

The table below is the short version of what each city page argues.

CityThe local problemWhat the work becomes
KathmanduThe most contested market in Nepal, and the one where mobile and mixed Nepali-English queries dominateProfile strength, service pages, and content tuned to how the Valley actually types
PokharaThe buyer is overseas, so proximity is close to irrelevantSource-market targeting, seasonal content, and booking direct instead of through an OTA
ChitwanIndian agencies answer Bharatpur and Narayangarh queriesWording and entity signals that make the Nepali business the obvious local answer
ButwalMost categories in Rupandehi are unclaimedClaim the category first; bilingual queries and local pack basics go a long way
BiratnagarThe trades that carry the city are B2B and return no reportable search volumeOne page per named service, counted in enquiries rather than sessions
DharanThe map pack is held from out of townProfile and proximity signals first, because the slots are winnable
ItahariItahari-addressed profiles hold five of twelve slots on Dharan's queriesUnderstanding which page one you are actually competing on

How a city engagement runs

  1. Run the city's real queries with the location and date recorded, and keep the screenshots. Nothing gets planned from a national keyword list.
  2. Audit the Google Business Profile against the businesses currently holding the map pack — categories, services, photos, posts and reviews, in that order.
  3. Build or fix the city page and the service pages it links to, so a searcher who lands anywhere on the site can reach the thing they wanted in one click.
  4. Fix the citation and entity layer: one name, one address, one phone number, everywhere the business appears.
  5. Report in enquiries and calls, not rankings alone.

If you want the underlying method before you pick a city, the local SEO service page covers what is included and what it costs, and the local SEO guide for Nepal businesses is the free version you can run yourself.

Seven cities,
seven checked playbooks.

Each page names the queries it checked, the date it checked them, and the tool it used. Click through to the city you trade in.

Not on the list? The work is the same anywhere in Nepal — these seven simply have a page because I checked their results in detail. Ask about your city →

The services
behind every city page.

A city page decides the priority order. These are the practices it draws on.

  • Local SEO — Google Business Profile, map pack visibility, citations and reviews. The first thing that moves in any city on this list.
  • Technical SEO — crawlability, speed and indexing. A city page cannot rank from a site Google struggles to read.
  • On-page SEO — titles, headings, internal links and the wording that decides which query a page answers.
  • Content SEO — the pages and guides that earn the authority a local pack listing alone cannot.
  • Link building — local associations, chambers and genuine local coverage, not bought placements.
  • SEO audit — the starting point when you do not yet know which of the above is your bottleneck.

City SEO in Nepal:
common questions.

Do I need a separate page for my city?

Only if you can say something about that city that is not true of everywhere else. A page that swaps the city name into the same paragraph is a thin page, and Google treats it as one. The seven pages on this site exist because each city returned a genuinely different search result: Indian agencies answering Chitwan queries, an out-of-town map pack in Dharan, no reportable volume in Biratnagar's B2B trades. If your city has a real local difference, a page is worth building. If it does not, put the effort into your Google Business Profile instead.

Which matters more in Nepal, the website or the Google Business Profile?

For a business that serves customers in one city, the Business Profile usually moves first and moves fastest. It decides whether you appear in the Maps three-pack, which sits above the organic results on mobile, and it can be fixed in days rather than months. The website decides what happens after the click, and it is what earns rankings for the queries that do not trigger a map pack at all. Both are needed. The profile is simply the cheaper thing to fix first, which is why every city engagement on this site starts there.

Why do Indian websites rank for my Nepali city?

Because the query is ambiguous to Google and the Indian sites are stronger. Several Nepali city names have Indian equivalents or sit close to the border, and the competing Indian agencies usually have more links, more reviews and clearer entity signals. The fix is not a trick. It is making the Nepali business unmistakably the local answer: a verified Business Profile with a Nepali address, consistent citations on Nepali directories, prices in NPR, and page wording that names the district and province rather than the city alone. The Chitwan and Biratnagar pages work through this in detail.

How long does local SEO take to show results in Nepal?

Business Profile work can move the map pack within two to six weeks when the profile was genuinely incomplete, because you are filling gaps Google already wanted filled. Website ranking changes take longer, commonly three to six months, and longer again in a contested market like Kathmandu. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is either targeting a query nobody searches or is about to do something you will have to undo. The full timeline breakdown sets out what usually moves when.

Do you work with businesses outside these seven cities?

Yes. The seven cities have pages because I checked their search results closely enough to write something specific. The method does not change elsewhere in Nepal: check what the city's queries actually return, fix the Business Profile, then fix the site. If you trade somewhere not listed here, ask and the first thing you will get back is what your city's results currently look like.

What does city-level SEO cost?

Retainers are published and start at NPR 20,000 a month, month to month, with no lock-in contract and client ownership of every account. What a city needs varies: Butwal, where categories are unclaimed, is a smaller job than Kathmandu, where every slot is contested. The pricing section lists the bands, and the SEO pricing guide for Nepal covers the wider market so you can judge any quote, including mine.
