An SEO expert in Kathmandu you can actually sit down with.

I'm Suraj Giri, an independent SEO expert working with Kathmandu businesses on local SEO, technical audits, and content strategy — the three services that decide who gets found when the Valley searches. My retainers are published — NPR 20,000 to 80,000 per month, month to month, no lock-in — and every engagement starts with a written scope. I'm based in Suryabinayak, Bhaktapur, about 30 minutes from central Kathmandu, so kickoffs, strategy sessions, and training can happen at your office. No agency layers, no account managers: you work directly with me.

8+ yrs

Working in organic search for Nepal businesses since 2018.

Kathmandu is Nepal's most
competitive search market.

Kathmandu has the highest business density in Nepal, and the search results reflect it. Education consultancies cluster along Putalisadak and Dillibazar and fight over the same abroad-study queries. Hospitals and clinics compete for every symptom and specialty search in the Valley. Travel and trekking operators concentrated around Thamel chase both foreign tourists and domestic travelers. Restaurants, hotels, and real estate agencies round out a SERP landscape where page one is genuinely contested in almost every vertical.

How Kathmandu searches also matters. The overwhelming majority of local searches happen on mobile, "near me" queries are common, and people routinely search in mixed Nepali-English — "kathmandu ma best momo," "putalisadak consultancy," or a Nepali question typed in Roman script. A strategy that only targets clean English keywords misses a real slice of how Kathmandu customers actually search.

There is a second dynamic that catches businesses out. The Valley is three municipalities — Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur — but customers do not search that way. Somebody in Jawalakhel looking for a dentist is not filtering by municipal boundary; they are being shown whatever is closest and best rated. That means a Patan business competes directly with a Kathmandu one, while a business in Chabahil may lose a customer two kilometres away to a competitor with a better profile. Proximity is a ranking factor you cannot change, which makes the factors you can change disproportionately important.

Seasonality matters here in a way it does not in most markets. Education consultancy search peaks around intake cycles. Trekking and travel demand follows the autumn and spring seasons, with the research window opening months earlier from source markets in different time zones. Retail and restaurant search moves sharply around Dashain and Tihar. A content calendar built without those cycles publishes the right page two months after the demand has passed.

The upside of all this competition: most Kathmandu businesses — and even some of the SEO experts they hire — still get the fundamentals wrong. Thin service pages, neglected Google Business Profiles, inconsistent listings, no review strategy. Fix the signals search engines actually reward, and a business that executes properly can outrank bigger, older competitors — I see it happen in Valley SERPs constantly.

What local SEO looks like
for a Kathmandu business.

The local pack inside the Kathmandu Valley has its own dynamics — Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur are separate municipalities that Google often treats as one dense market, and proximity to the searcher decides a lot, something many SEO experts outside the Valley get wrong. Here is where I focus for Valley businesses.

Google Business Profile, set up right

Correct primary category, accurate Kathmandu service areas, complete services and attributes, real photos, and posts that keep the profile active — the single highest-leverage local asset.

Valley local pack strategy

The pack shifts as searchers move between Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur. I map where you actually rank across the Valley and work the levers — relevance, prominence, proximity — you can influence.

Citations on Nepal listing sites

Consistent name, address, and phone across the Nepal business directories and listing sites that Google actually checks — cleaning up old addresses and duplicate listings along the way.

Review generation that compounds

A simple, repeatable workflow to earn steady Google reviews from real Kathmandu customers, plus owner responses that reinforce your services and neighborhoods in the profile.

Ward and neighborhood landing content

When a business genuinely serves specific areas — New Road, Baneshwor, Maharajgunj, Patan — dedicated landing content for those areas captures neighborhood-level queries competitors ignore. Only where it's real; never doorway spam.

Mixed-language query coverage

Content and profile signals tuned for how Kathmandu actually searches — mobile-first, "near me," and Nepali-English mixed queries — not just the clean English keywords in a research tool.

Five things Kathmandu businesses get wrong

These are not exotic problems. They are the ones I find on most Valley sites before anything else is worth doing, and every one of them is free to fix.

An unverified or unclaimed profile. Unverified profiles rank poorly and can be edited by strangers. Where a former employee or a previous agency holds the profile, the reclaim process takes longer than most owners expect — which is a reason to start it now rather than when it becomes urgent.

The wrong primary category. This single setting decides which searches you are eligible to appear in at all. Choosing something broad and safe over something specific and accurate is the most common self-inflicted ranking limit in the Valley.

Contact details that disagree with each other. A mobile number written with +977 on the website and without it on Facebook, an address given as a landmark in one place and a street in another, a business listed under both an English and a Nepali transliteration. Google cross-references these, and inconsistency creates doubt where you need confidence.

One page carrying every service. A single services page listing eight offerings is competing for eight different searches and will win none of them. This is the most expensive structural mistake on this list, because fixing it after a site is built costs several times what building it correctly would have.

Reviews treated as something that happens by itself. Reviews influence both ranking and the choice a customer makes between three similar listings, and they are the one asset a competitor cannot copy. Asking at the moment of satisfaction, with a direct link, is the entire technique. Buying them is increasingly detectable and damages the credibility you were trying to build.

Every service, available
to Kathmandu businesses.

Whether you need a single audit or a full retainer, these are the core practices behind the SEO strategies I build for Kathmandu businesses — each one tied to real business goals, not vanity rankings.

What SEO costs
in Kathmandu.

My rates are published, and they are the same for a Kathmandu business as for one anywhere else in Nepal — the city carries no premium, though competitive Valley verticals often need the higher tiers to make real progress. Every tier is month to month with no lock-in. Current as of August 2026.

Starter — NPR 20,000/mo

For small and local Kathmandu businesses building their first organic foundation: technical health monitoring, on-page optimization for core pages, local SEO and Google Business Profile, and monthly reporting from your own Search Console.

Growth — NPR 45,000/mo

For businesses competing in the Valley's busier verticals — consultancies, clinics, travel: everything in Starter plus content strategy and briefs, link building outreach, and keyword expansion with rank tracking.

Premium — NPR 80,000/mo

For established brands scaling organic across many terms at once: everything in Growth plus full content production, digital PR and authority links, and CRO guidance with regular strategy calls.

One-off work is priced per project — a fixed-scope comprehensive audit starts at NPR 30,000. If you are comparing quotes from other providers, the market bands and the questions worth asking are in my SEO pricing guide for Nepal, and the full tier detail is on the services page. The free opportunity review decides which tier — if any — is the right purchase; sometimes the honest answer is that SEO is not your constraint yet.

Searching for an
SEO agency in Kathmandu?

A lot of the people typing "SEO agency in Kathmandu" do not actually need an agency, and it is worth being clear about the difference before you sit through sales calls. The market here splits into a few distinct shapes, at very different prices.

Full-service digital agencies sell bundled packages — SEO alongside web development, paid ads, and social — typically at NPR 34,000 to 88,000 a month. That is the right buy when you genuinely need production across several channels at once and nobody in-house to run them. Established founder-led SEO practices start near NPR 150,000 a month, usually with three-to-six-month minimums. Marketplace freelancers sit around NPR 8,000 to 15,000, where the arithmetic rarely permits real diagnostic work. Independent consultants — my category — run roughly NPR 20,000 to 80,000 a month, and what you are buying is senior attention on the search problem itself, with direct access to the person doing the work.

Comparing an NPR 45,000 consultant quote against an NPR 45,000 agency package is not comparing like with like: one is focused expertise on a narrow problem, the other is a production process spread across several channels. Which one you need depends on where your constraint actually is — and if the first call makes clear that yours is a full marketing department rather than search, I will say so and point you at the right shape of provider. The full comparison, with rate bands and the questions that expose a weak provider, is in my freelancer vs agency rates guide and how to choose an SEO company in Nepal.

Kathmandu businesses
I work with most.

The engagements differ, but the pattern is the same: a real Kathmandu business whose customers are already searching, a website that isn't showing up for them yet, and a need for steady organic growth that a scattershot digital marketing push never delivered.

  1. SMBs and local storefronts. Restaurants, salons, repair services and retail — businesses whose customers search on a phone and choose from the local pack, often within minutes of arriving. For most of these the Google Business Profile outperforms the website, and the correct first investment is the free asset rather than the paid one. Where a website earns its place is in holding the menu, price list or service detail that turns a look into a visit.
  2. Clinics and healthcare practices. Specialty and symptom queries across the Valley, where credibility signals do more work than keyword placement. Practitioner credentials, medical schema, accurate opening hours and review recency all carry weight, and patients search by area far more often than by clinic name — which makes area-level relevance more valuable than brand terms.
  3. Education consultancies. The Putalisadak and Dillibazar corridor is the most contested search battleground in Nepal, and nearly every competitor publishes the same page about the same five destinations. Depth is the only durable differentiator: genuinely useful detail on one country's requirements, intake timelines and visa process beats ten interchangeable overviews, and it attracts the parent who is comparing rather than the student who is browsing.
  4. Travel and trekking agencies. Thamel operators serve two audiences that barely overlap. International visitors research months ahead, from other time zones, in English, and compare itineraries in detail. Walk-in and domestic bookings happen on a phone, nearby, that week. The first needs content depth and source-market awareness; the second needs a complete profile with current photographs. Building for one and assuming it serves the other is the usual mistake.
  5. Ecommerce and startups. Kathmandu online stores and product startups, where the constraint is almost always technical scale rather than content: filters generating thousands of crawlable URLs, near-identical product descriptions, and category pages that have to serve browsing and buying at once. Getting the structure right early is far cheaper than retrofitting it once the catalogue has grown.
  6. Professional services and B2B. Law firms, accountants, IT companies and agencies selling considered purchases, where a small number of qualified enquiries matters more than traffic volume. These businesses usually rank for their own name and nothing else, and the work is building the pages that answer what a buyer researches before they are ready to call.

The Valley does not search
as one market.

Kathmandu's commercial districts have distinct search behaviour, and a strategy that treats the city as a single target misses most of it. These are the patterns I work with most often, and what each one actually requires.

Putalisadak & Dillibazar — education consultancies

The most contested corridor in Nepali search. Dozens of consultancies compete for the same abroad-study queries, and almost all of them publish the same page. What wins here is destination and visa-specific depth — a genuinely useful page on one country's requirements beats ten generic ones.

Thamel & Chhetrapati — travel and trekking

Two audiences on one street. Foreign visitors research months ahead from other time zones and search in English; walk-in and same-day bookings come from people already in the neighbourhood on a phone. The first needs content depth, the second needs a complete Google Business Profile with current photographs.

Maharajgunj & Baneshwor — clinics and healthcare

Symptom and specialty searches, where credibility signals carry real weight. Practitioner credentials, medical schema, review recency and correct opening hours matter more here than keyword placement. Patients also search by area far more than by clinic name.

New Road & Ason — retail and trade

High proximity sensitivity and heavy mobile use. Many businesses in this area have no website at all, which means a complete profile with accurate hours, real photographs and steady reviews frequently outperforms a competitor's neglected site.

Patan & Jhamsikhel — hospitality and services

A distinct dining and lifestyle search economy with a mix of resident, expatriate and visitor intent. Businesses here are frequently discovered through Maps rather than through search results, which changes where the effort should go.

Bhaktapur & the eastern Valley

Thinner competition and a higher share of Nepali-language and Roman-script queries. Businesses here often rank for Valley-wide terms with far less effort than a central Kathmandu competitor would need, simply because fewer rivals have done the basics.

Area pages are only worth building where the business genuinely serves that area and can say something specific about it. Spinning up twenty near-identical neighbourhood pages is a doorway tactic, it is against Google's guidelines, and in a market this small it is obvious to the customer as well as to the algorithm.

The first ninety days
of a Kathmandu engagement.

So you can judge a proposal — mine or anyone else's — against something concrete. Timings assume a business with an existing site and a reachable developer.

  1. Weeks 1–2 — Diagnosis, before anything is changed. A full crawl, indexation check, and review of what Search Console already knows about your site. Competitor analysis at page level, not domain level: which specific pages beat you, and on what. This is also where I establish whether SEO is genuinely your constraint, and say so if it is not.
  2. Weeks 2–3 — Demand mapping for the Valley. Which searches in your category carry commercial intent in Kathmandu, including the Roman-script and mixed-language variants that keyword tools underreport. The output is a page-to-query map: what should exist, what already exists, and what is competing with itself.
  3. Weeks 3–5 — Technical remediation and Google Business Profile. Fix what is stopping pages from being crawled or indexed, then complete the profile properly — primary category, services, service areas, hours including festival closures, photographs. For most Valley businesses the profile is the fastest-moving asset on this list.
  4. Weeks 4–8 — Structure and on-page work. Usually the highest-value phase: giving each service you sell somewhere of its own to rank, rewriting titles and headings against real queries, and building internal links that actually reflect how a customer moves through the decision.
  5. Weeks 6–10 — Citations, reviews, and the local signal set. Consistent name, address and phone across the Nepali directories Google checks, duplicate and stale listings cleaned up, and a review workflow your staff can actually run without being reminded.
  6. Weeks 8–12 — First honest read. Local visibility usually shows movement in this window. Competitive organic terms generally do not, and I would rather set that expectation now than explain it in month three. The ninety-day report says what moved, what did not, and what I think that means — from your own Search Console, not from a screenshot.

Questions I get from
Kathmandu business owners.

Do you meet clients in person in Kathmandu?

Yes. I am based in Suryabinayak, Bhaktapur — about 30 minutes from central Kathmandu — and I meet Kathmandu clients in person regularly. Kickoff workshops, strategy reviews, and training sessions can all happen at your office or a convenient location in the city. Day-to-day work then runs over email, WhatsApp, and video calls, so you get in-person access without paying for it on every task.

How much does SEO cost in Kathmandu?

My rates are published and the same anywhere in Nepal — Starter at NPR 20,000, Growth at NPR 45,000, and Premium at NPR 80,000 per month, all month to month with no lock-in. A fixed-scope comprehensive audit starts at NPR 30,000 as a one-off. Kathmandu businesses often need the higher tiers simply because their verticals are more competitive, not because of a city premium. The full market breakdown by business size and scope is in my SEO pricing guide for Nepal.

How long does it take to rank in Kathmandu?

For local pack visibility, a properly optimized Google Business Profile with consistent citations and steady reviews usually shows movement within 6 to 12 weeks. Organic rankings for competitive Kathmandu queries — education consultancy, hospital, travel, and hotel terms — typically take 4 to 12 months depending on your site's current authority and how entrenched the competition is. Less contested neighborhood and service-specific queries move much faster.

Do you work with businesses outside Kathmandu?

Yes. I work with businesses across all of Nepal — Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal, Biratnagar, and everywhere in between — as well as Nepali businesses targeting international customers. Everything I do in person for Kathmandu clients works equally well remotely: audits, strategy, implementation support, and reporting all run over video calls and shared documents.

What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO for a Kathmandu business?

Regular (organic) SEO targets the standard search results — it is about your website's content, technical health, and authority. Local SEO targets the map pack and "near me" results — it is about your Google Business Profile, your citations on Nepal listing sites, your reviews, and your proximity to the searcher. A Kathmandu clinic or restaurant usually wins more customers from the local pack first, while a consultancy or ecommerce store leans more on organic rankings. Most Kathmandu businesses need both, weighted by how customers actually find them.

Which areas of Kathmandu do you work with?

All of them, and the Valley more broadly — Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur. In practice the area matters less for where I work from than for how the strategy is built: a Putalisadak education consultancy, a Thamel trekking operator and a Maharajgunj clinic are competing in three completely different search economies, and the plan should reflect that rather than treating Kathmandu as one target.

Do Nepali-language or Roman-script searches matter in Kathmandu?

Yes, and they are consistently underestimated because keyword research tools report them poorly. Valley customers frequently search in mixed Nepali-English, in Roman script, or with a Nepali word inside an otherwise English query. These queries usually have far less competition than their clean English equivalents, which makes them some of the cheapest visibility available to a business that bothers to target them.

Can a small Kathmandu business outrank an established competitor?

Frequently, yes. Ranking in this market is decided far more at page level than by accumulated domain strength, and most established Valley competitors have not done the fundamentals — profiles are incomplete, service pages are thin, reviews are stale. A smaller business that executes properly on one clearly defined service can beat a larger, older one on that service. It cannot beat them on everything at once, which is why sequencing matters.

Is local SEO enough, or do I need a website too?

It depends on how customers buy. A restaurant or a repair service can win most of its enquiries from the Google Business Profile alone, and for those businesses the profile should be the first investment by a wide margin. A consultancy, clinic or agency whose customers research before contacting needs both: the profile brings discovery, the site does the persuading. The wrong order — building a large site before completing a free profile — is the most common misallocation I see in the Valley.

Should I hire an SEO agency in Kathmandu or an independent consultant?

It depends on what you are buying. Kathmandu's full-service agencies typically sell bundled packages of roughly NPR 34,000 to 88,000 a month covering SEO alongside web development, ads and social — the right choice when you need production across several channels at once. An independent consultant gives you senior attention on the search problem itself, at roughly NPR 20,000 to 80,000 a month, with direct access to the person doing the work. I am the second kind, and if what you actually need is a full marketing department, I will say so on the first call.

Start with the Kathmandu guides.

If you are still comparing SEO experts in Kathmandu, these three guides cover the ground a Kathmandu business has to get right: the complete guide to local SEO for Kathmandu businesses, setting up and optimizing a Google Business Profile in Nepal, and the Nepal business listing sites worth your citations.

If you are weighing providers rather than tactics, how to hire an SEO expert in Nepal covers the questions worth asking on a first call and the cases where the honest answer is to hire nobody yet. How I work sets out scope, account ownership and what you keep at the end.
